LEGO Mill Yard Project
The SEE Science Center in Manchester, NH is about to become the permanent home for the largest mini-figure scale LEGO display ever created in the world. Consisting of 2 to 3 Million LEGO bricks, the finished layout is slated to open late spring 2006 and will be 95ft by 22ft of pure LEGO fun! Canals with running water will bring energy and motion to a slice of Manchester mill-life circa 1900. The display will include working rail lines, a bridge to span the Merrimack river, a section with employee houses, a cemetery, a park and even an interactive section with perhaps a functional fly-wheel and cross-section of the mill where you can take a look inside to see what equipment helped fuel the industrial revolution.
We started the project back in the spring of 2004 when Master Model Designers Steve and Erik approached the LEGO group that I belong to (NELUG) and asked us if we were willing to commit to the ambitious proposal. Since that time, we've successfully completed Phases I through IV with even a half-phase we called 3.1. Phase V is scheduled for mid November 2005 and will hopefully continue our progress with recreating the downtown area. From there, the focus will be on populating the display and completing the housing and public spaces that supported the community.
